Bhrigu Lake Trek – A Sacred High-Altitude Hike Near Manali
High above the clouds, nestled in the Pir Panjal range near Manali, lies Bhrigu Lake — a shimmering, high-altitude glacial lake steeped in legend and serenity. Situated at an elevation of 4,270 meters, this alpine gem is a spiritual destination as much as it is a natural one.
According to ancient Hindu mythology, Bhrigu Lake is where Maharishi Bhrigu, one of the revered Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages), meditated and performed penance. Locals believe the lake never completely freezes — even during the harshest winters — due to the sage’s divine energy. Gazing into its still waters is thought to bring clarity, reflection, and spiritual cleansing.
The trek begins from Gulaba, about 20 km from Manali, and takes you through dense cedar forests, sweeping meadows (locally called “Bugyals”), and panoramic views of peaks like Hanuman Tibba and Deo Tibba. During summer, the trail is carpeted with wildflowers and offers a rare chance to experience the lush side of Himachal Pradesh’s high-altitude terrain.
While the trek is moderately challenging, it’s suitable for beginners with good physical fitness. Over 3 days, you’ll ascend steadily, camp under star-lit skies, and finally reach the lake on the third day — a visual and emotional reward like no other.
