Bhaba Pass Trek – A Thrilling High-Altitude Crossover from Kinnaur to Spiti

The Bhaba Pass Trek is a breathtaking journey that connects the lush greenery of Kinnaur to the barren, high-altitude desert of Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. Starting from Kafnu, a quaint village in Kinnaur, this dramatic trek offers a perfect blend of contrasting landscapes, cultural diversity, and alpine adventure.

As you ascend from Kafnu, the trail takes you through dense pine forests, vibrant alpine meadows, and glacial streams. With every step, the scenery changes — from thick vegetation and wildflowers to snowfields and moraine. The highlight is crossing the Bhaba Pass at 4,865 meters, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Pin Valley and surrounding peaks.

Once over the pass, the landscape shifts drastically into the stark, arid terrain of Spiti Valley. Here, you’ll witness wind-carved mountains, deep gorges, and a distinct Tibetan Buddhist culture. The trek ends at the scenic village of Mud, a serene hamlet that also serves as a base for the Pin Parvati Pass Trek.

5
Day 05:- Mud – Baldar(3900m) (5-6 hrs).
The trail begins from Mudh, the last village in Pin Valley. You'll cross or walk alongside the Pin River, which flows through a wide valley. Terrain is rocky, barren, and dusty — classic Spiti desert landscape.     The trail gradually ascends along the river, entering Pin Valley National Park.  Keep an eye out for Himalayan blue sheep (bharal) or snow leopard tracks (rare). This area is dry, windy, and can be exposed to strong sun or sudden cold gusts. In June/July, streams may be high in the afternoon due to melting snow — plan accordingly. Baldar is a flat camping area surrounded by mountains.  It serves as the base camp before crossing the Bhabha Pass the next day. There are no permanent shelters, just tent setups by trekkers and guides.
6
Day 06:- Baldar- Bhaba pass(4890m) – Phushtring(4100m):(7-8 hrs)
Begin early, around 5:00–6:00 AM to avoid harsh weather or snowmelt in the afternoon. You’ll walk over loose scree, snow patches, and possibly ice.   Bhaba Pass sits at a narrow saddle with panoramic views. After crossing the pass, a steep descent begins on the Kinnaur side. The terrain transitions into lush meadows, streams, and wildflowers — a sharp contrast to Spiti’s desert. A few tricky sections involve glacier crossings or river crossings. Reach the Phustirang Campsite, a grassy meadow beside a stream — ideal for camping and recovery. There is a spectacular alpine setting with views of Bhaba Pass and surrounding peaks.
7
Day 07:- Phushtring – Mulling(3250m)- (4 – 5 hours).
The trail descends gradually along a scenic alpine valley. Expect lush green meadows, wildflowers, and glacial streams. The path is well-defined and less rocky than previous days. You may spot shepherds’ huts and flocks of sheep/goats. A steeper descent begins after Kara. The trail enters dense pine and birch forests — a big change from the high alpine terrain. You'll walk alongside a river with several stream crossings. The trail might be muddy or slippery in places, especially after rains. Mulling is grassy open area, often used by shepherds and trekkers.
8
Day 08:- Mulling – Kafnu(2350m)- 4 hrs
The trail starts with a steady descent through alpine grasslands. You'll see waterfalls and walk alongside the Bhaba River. Terrain is initially open, then gradually enters thick coniferous forest. Dense pine, oak, and birch forest makes the descent scenic and shaded. There are a few wooden bridges over streams and small log crossings. The trail can be slippery or muddy after rain—watch your footing. The trail becomes broader and more defined as you near civilization. Pass by hydro project pipelines and construction areas near Kafnu. You'll eventually reach a road, leading to Kafnu village.
9
Day 09:- Kafnu to Wangtu (4 hrs). Drive to Dharamshala
The road from Kafnu to Wangtu is narrow, unpaved in parts. From Wangtu to Shimla, the road follows NH-5. From Shimla stay one day and travel to Chandigarh airport.
