Hampta Pass Trek: A Journey between two Worlds

Nestled in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, the Hampta Pass trek is a rare Himalayan adventure where two contrasting worlds meet — the lush green valleys of Kullu on one side and the arid, dramatic desert of Spiti on the other. This five-day journey is perfect for beginners and adventure seekers looking to explore high-altitude terrain with a blend of natural beauty, mythology, and spiritual energy.

The trail starts from Jobra and takes you through dense alpine forests, vibrant wildflower meadows, and icy glacier-fed streams. As you climb toward the pass, situated at approximately 4,270 meters (14,000 feet), the landscape transforms drastically. Crossing the pass feels like stepping from earth into the sky, unveiling barren, moon-like views of the Spiti Valley. The trek ends with a steep descent to Chhatru and an optional drive to the magical Chandratal Lake — a turquoise jewel in the cold desert of Lahaul.

Folklore & Legends of Hampta

According to local legends, the name Hampta is derived from the nearby village of Hamta, believed to be named after Hampta Rishi, a sage who meditated in this region. The trail was once a sacred route used by wandering saints and shepherds, moving between Kullu and Lahaul in search of pasture and solitude.

Folklore also connects this trail to the Pandavas, who are believed to have crossed Hampta Pass during their exile (Vanvas). It is said that Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, was guided by sages on this route during his spiritual journey through the Himalayas. The transformation in terrain from fertile valleys to stark deserts is often seen as symbolic — a metaphor for the soul’s journey from materialism to enlightenment.

Even today, local shepherds speak of the sacred winds at Hampta, believed to carry the whispers of sages and the footsteps of mythic travelers.

Day 04: Chikka to Balugera(3770m): 5hrs.
The trail follows the Rani Nallah, with the path flanked by vibrant alpine flowers in hues of purple, pink, and yellow. A picturesque valley known for its colorful flora and serene ambiance. Expect to cross glacial streams, it's advisable to carry sandals or waterproof shoes for these sections. As you approach Balugera, the terrain becomes rocky, requiring careful navigation over uneven boulders. Balugera, meaning "bed of sand," is a sandy plain formed by glacial deposits, offering a tranquil camping spot with views of towering peaks around.
5
Day 05: Trek from Balugera to Shiyagoru(3700m) over Hampta pass (4298m): 9-10hrs.
The trail starts with a steep ascent, traversing glacial moraines and rocky patches. The climb is long and sustained, passing through snow patches (especially till mid-July). Near the pass, the trail may become narrow and windy, with snow on both sides early in the season. Once you reach the Hampta Pass, the views are spectacular. You can see the lush green Kullu Valley on one side and the barren, stark Spiti Valley on the other — a dramatic contrast. The descent is steep and slippery, especially if snow is present. You may need to glissade (slide down on snow) if there’s a lot of snow. Trek poles and proper shoes with grip help a lot here. Shiyagoru is a flat, grassy campsite with a stream nearby, nestled in a cold desert-like environment. It is cold and often windy.
6
Day 06: Shiyagoru to Chatru(3353m)- Manali
The trail follows a gentle descent initially through moraine and glacial valleys. It’s a rocky path with loose gravel. You’ll pass a few glacial streams — some may require barefoot crossing if bridges are unavailable. Gradually, green meadows give way to barren Spiti landscapes. Chatru is located at the confluence of three valleys: Hampta, Rohtang, and Spiti. (Option to Visit Chandratal Lake)
